Men’s Day is a time to notice and appreciate the men in our lives—their contributions as fathers, partners, friends and creators, as well as the everyday things they do that often go unacknowledged. Masculinity involves the courage to take responsibility, stand up for what matters and create something meaningful. It also means listening to yourself: What am I working for? Where am I directing my strength? What kind of man do I want to be?
The Men’s Day gong journey is an invitation to take a break from everyday activities and turn your attention to yourself. Accompanied by the sounds of gongs and other instruments, you can rest and make space for whatever needs attention in your life.
Women, give the man in your life a gift for Men’s Day: an evening for himself, and tell him what you appreciate about him. Both men and women are welcome on this gong journey. Come alone or with a partner to take time for yourself and share a sound journey together.
The sounds of gongs affect the brain, bringing it into alpha and theta wave states, which in turn supports increased creativity and strengthens the immune system. Our thoughts, feelings, emotions, words and actions are also vibrations that we radiate. Gong sounds can be used to regulate, change and balance these vibrations. People who have taken part in gong meditations and ceremonies often say they feel rested, refreshed and inspired after a session. They experience new solutions to problems, find answers to questions, and feel inner peace, joy, bliss and bursts of creativity.
A gong journey is a meditative session in which participants lie or sit comfortably while a sound therapist or musician plays gongs, creating an immersive sound environment. This practice allows for deep relaxation, during which participants may experience altered states of consciousness, visions or emotional release. Sound waves help reduce mental activity and enter a meditative, trance-like state in which the body and mind can initiate their own healing processes.
Sound healing with gongs is part of the broader practice of sound therapy, which uses a variety of instruments and techniques for healing. It is based on the understanding that everything in the universe, including the human body, vibrates at certain frequencies. The deep resonances of gongs help restore harmony to the body’s natural vibrations, easing physical tension and emotional stress.
Sound healing with gongs may offer several potential benefits, including:
🟡 Reducing stress and anxiety. The deeply relaxing effect of gong sounds may help lower stress and anxiety levels.
🟡 Deeper relaxation and better sleep. The practice may improve sleep quality, helping participants fall asleep faster and sleep more deeply.
🟡 Emotional release. A gong journey offers a safe environment for expressing and releasing emotions.
🟡 Mental clarity and heightened intuition. The meditative state encouraged by gongs helps clarify thoughts and strengthen intuition.
No previous experience with gong journeys is required. The journey takes place lying down, and you can simply rest and listen to the sounds during this time.
🧘 Practical information: Mattresses, blankets and pillows are provided for the gong journey. We recommend wearing comfortable clothing. There is also an opportunity to change clothes at the venue so you can get settled before the journey.
Please note: Contraindications for a gong journey:
– Severe tinnitus or hearing problems – Intensive sound therapy may irritate or worsen hearing problems.
– Psychiatric problems – Post-traumatic conditions or other mental health disorders may make the sounds anxiety-inducing.
– Epilepsy – Rhythmic, loud sounds may trigger an epileptic seizure.
– Recent trauma – Recent traumatic experiences may increase the risk of emotional reactions.
– High-risk pregnancy – Although generally safe, caution is advised in a high-risk pregnancy.
Important: If you have been diagnosed with a health condition, consult the organiser or your treating physician before participating.
Journey facilitator: Andres Põhjala
Transpersonal psychotherapist, hypnotherapist and gong player
Gongs help me reach a state in which thoughts no longer command all of my attention. Amid the sounds, the body can rest, and a person may notice something within themselves for which there is no time in everyday life. In my work, I bring together psychological introspection, bodily awareness and sound. The purpose of this journey is not to escape from your life, but to return to it and notice more of what is already there.
