What is a “Walk-shop”? A “Walk-shop” is a therapeutic walking photography workshop that combines movement, presence and creativity. The method is based on Behavioural Activation Therapeutic Photography (BATP), which connects the principles of behavioural activation—taking small steps to increase activity and well-being—with photography as a practice of self-expression and mindfulness.
What is the aim of the “Walk-shop”?
- To draw attention to unnoticed details of everyday life
- To reduce stress and anxiety through mindfulness and creativity
- To offer movement and fresh air in a supportive group
- To create an opportunity for self-expression through photographs
- To support participants in finding joy and calm in simple moments
Participants gain practical experience in using photography as a tool for well-being in everyday life.
Who is the “Walk-shop” for?
It is suitable for anyone who:
- Feels the need to take time for themselves
- Is looking for a creative outlet without technical pressure or judgement
- Wants to reduce anxiety, tension or fatigue
- Is interested in art-based and creative methods
- Simply wants to walk and create with others in a safe environment
No prior photography or therapy experience is needed.
How to prepare
Equipment: A mobile phone or a simple digital camera is enough.
Clothing: Comfortable shoes and clothing suitable for the weather.
Requirements: A willingness to be present, move and share your experience.
The one-hour walk is approximately 3 km.
Schedule (2.5 hours):
13:00–13:30 — Introduction: the workshop theme, walking and photography instructions
13:30–15:00 — Walk and photography on a chosen theme
15:00–15:30 — Reflection: sharing the experience and photographs with the group
15:30–16:00 — Summary and continued practice: how to continue independently
What can you expect?
- A walk of up to an hour with a camera (preferably a phone, which allows for quicker action), exploring silence, details and hidden stories
- Creative tasks that help you see the world with fresh eyes
- A warm, supportive sharing circle where you can share your experience and photographs with others
- Three printed photographs to remember your moment, emotions and journey
This time, the journey begins and ends at Tefo Stuudios, Ankru 8, Tallinn (Põhjala Factory), with hot tea and inspiring conversations. In between, there will be a little camera adventure, allowing the corners and curves of Põhjala to surprise you.
The walk is guided by Erika Tuulik, who has completed photography studies at EKA Open Academy and therapeutic photography studies at Robert Gordon University (UK, Aberdeen).
