On 19 November, we celebrate Beaujolais Nouveau Day at Terra. We’ll gather around a shared table, taste five wines and share dishes inspired by Burgundy cuisine.
Beaujolais Nouveau Day, or New Wine Day, is one of France’s best-known wine traditions. As early as the 19th century, Beaujolais grape growers marked the end of the harvest with that year’s young wine. Made from the Gamay grape, Nouveau is bottled around 6–8 weeks after the harvest. It is fresh and fruity, with low tannins, and is intended to be enjoyed young.
From 1951, the release date for the new wine was 15 November, but in 1985 the tradition became established of celebrating it on the third Thursday in November. On that day, the new vintage is welcomed around the world with the words “Le Beaujolais Nouveau est arrivé!” — Beaujolais’ new wine has arrived!
We’ll begin with a white Beaujolais. Then we’ll raise a glass of this year’s Beaujolais-Villages Nouveau and taste it alongside Domaine des Nugues’ red wine from Lancié. These village wines from two different producers and vintages offer a chance to discover how differently Beaujolais can express itself in the glass.
In the evening’s second comparison, we’ll taste two cru wines side by side: Trenel Juliénas Les Capitans 2019 and Domaine Labruyère Moulin-à-Vent Champ de Cour 2018. These wines come from two different growing sites and producers and have had time to develop in the bottle.
We’ll introduce the wines briefly and leave time for questions, eating and conversation. Both familiar faces from the wine club and those just discovering Beaujolais are welcome.
