Once a month, different scientists and specialists visit the permanent exhibition “What Do I Need Soil For?!” at MUHK (Maaelu Uudishimukeskus) to discuss complex topics in simple terms. Everyone interested in nature, food production, agriculture, the environment and future technologies is welcome to listen and join the discussion.

In January, we’ll take a closer look at food—more specifically, food that ends up in landfill for various reasons. How much food do we actually throw away, and why is that a problem? Mait Kriipsalu, Professor of Water Protection and Waste Management at the Estonian University of Life Sciences, will help us understand what happens to food after it has lost its value to us. We’ll look at the environmental impact of food waste, the roles of production, transport, consumption and waste management, and whether throwing food away can be avoided at all.

At the event, we’ll discuss where the line of reasonableness lies and what we can do to ensure that food reaches its intended destination as often as possible—our dining table.

Admission with a museum ticket. Please note: the Museum Card is not valid.

The events are supported by the Estonian Research Council.

Next event: 18 February 2027, 17:00–19:00 — Food Security: What’s on the Menu?
