A woman and a man meet every day at the same workplace. It is a traditional job, from eight in the morning until five in the evening, in a small office where the monotonous clatter of typewriters never stops as they perform the same task over and over: writing the names and addresses of potential customers on advertising postcards. This is how Silvia Payton and Paul Cunningham spend their days in one office. A woman and a man desperately trying, in their everyday conversations, to speak about what moves them, saddens them, and even hurts them. They firmly believe they will never have to do anything they do not want to do, and that this daily “mechanical” typing on postcards is only temporary work. “The Typists” is a play about wanting to live differently, about wanting to break free, if only briefly, from the shell of everyday routine, and at the same time about the deep fear of changing anything in an established life. It is a play about ambitions that are greater than the person who holds them.
