The Typists

A woman and a man meet every day at the same job. It is a traditional job, from eight in the morning until five in the evening, in a small office where the monotonous clatter of typewriters is heard constantly as they perform the same task: writing the names, surnames and addresses of potential customers on advertising postcards. This is how Silvia Peyton and Paul Cunningham spend their days in one office. A woman and a man, desperately trying through their daily conversations to speak about what moves them, saddens them, and even hurts them. They firmly believe they will never have to do what they do not want to do, and that this daily “machine-like” typing of postcards is only temporary work. “The Typists” is a play about wanting to live differently, about wanting to escape, at least for a while, the shell of everyday routine, and at the same time about the great fear of changing anything in an established life. It is a play about ambitions greater than the person themselves.
