The story of the spine’s beginnings – layer by layer 📅 Saturday, 21 November 2026, 11:00–16:00 📍 Kohvik Tee-line, Pikk tn 29, Järva-Jaani

Back, spine or spinal column – what do they have in common, and what sets them apart? How does the body’s axis take shape? What keeps us upright and enables us to move? How is the back connected to the nervous system and internal organs? We’ll explore the story of the back’s beginnings layer by layer – from development in the womb to the structure and function of the adult body. We’ll also take a look at history and discover the significance attributed to the spine in different cultures. And, most importantly, we’ll get hands-on! We’ll learn to sense our bodies better and try simple, safe techniques that can also be used at home. There is always something you can do for yourself and your family!

You do not need to have attended the first training day – new participants are welcome too!

PROGRAMME

11:00 Introduction
We’ll briefly recall our first meeting and introduce the day’s topics.

11:10 The story of the spine’s beginnings
The story of our back begins before we are born. How do the body’s axis, spinal cord and spinal column develop? We’ll look at human development in the womb and briefly explore the world of alchemical anatomy.

12:00 Break

12:10 The back through the ages
What have the back and spine meant in different cultures? The back as support, axis and connection. We’ll explore fascinating historical and mythological interpretations.

12:30 The back, layer by layer
Skin, connective tissue, muscles, ligaments and bones. We’ll look at what the back is made of and how its different layers support one another. We’ll fill in a workbook together.

13:00 Lunch

14:00 Touch and sensing with the hands
Why is touch important? What can our hands distinguish? We’ll revisit exercises from the first training day using “training devices” and continue with practical palpation exercises in pairs.

14:40 Spinal cord and nerves
How does information travel between the spinal cord, nerves and the rest of the body? We’ll look at how nerves exit the spinal cord and connect with different parts of the body.

15:00 Break

15:10 Connections between the back and internal organs
Why might an osteopath dealing with back problems also be interested in how the internal organs function? We’ll talk about the nervous system and the connections between the back and internal organs.

15:35 What can you try at home?
We’ll learn simple techniques and small tips for looking after your back in everyday life and offering safe support to those close to you. We’ll practise and consolidate what we’ve learned.

15:50 Questions and closing
