The grades of class 4b are not very good. But exams are approaching, and they will determine these children’s future for many years. Who is to blame, and what should be done? Few forces are stronger than parents’ desire for their children to do well. Few professions are taken more to heart than teaching. Teachers are the ones who see most closely how the shoots of the future are germinating in the present day. These two responsible parties, parents and teachers, meet at a parents’ meeting. Behind closed doors, they discuss the suitability of the methodology and the worrying learning results. Inevitably, all of this reflects both society and human nature. And most importantly—everything may be resolved quite differently from how it initially seems. This is how it is everywhere in the world. And, as everywhere in the world, when things become very serious, they often become very funny as well.

German playwrights Lutz Hübner and Sarah Nemitz have focused on plays addressing the pain points of the education system, captivating young people, their parents and teachers alike. They have written them together for decades. Hübner and Nemitz fearlessly tackle the most difficult subjects, but always do so in a vital, humane manner and—with what matters most—healthy humour.

Hübner and Nemitz’s legendary play, performed in dozens of German-language theatres and premiered in Estonia ten years ago in Margo Teder’s production, is brought to the stage at Südalinna Teater by Aare Toikka from VAT Teater.
