“Fog” is a dreamlike psychological drama in which reality merges with a world of memories, fantasy and magic. The play tells the story of a young woman named Ema. After many years, Ema returns to visit her childhood home, where she remembers being happy and believing in tomorrow. But for some time now, a family she does not know has been living there. Ema introduces herself to them warmly, and they invite her inside. That is how she finds herself in her childhood room...
Try to imagine that you live with your beloved family in a cosy home, and one day a stranger appears in your apartment doorway, casually mentioning that this used to be her childhood home. You kindly invite your unexpected guest inside, but she decides not to leave. What would you do?
Now imagine that, late on an autumn evening, overcome by deep loneliness, you happen to find yourself near your childhood home. You look up at the illuminated window of your childhood room and, before you know it, you are standing at the door of your former home… You need so little—a brief conversation with another person, a quiet encounter with your childhood memories, with a time when belief was still alive. Belief in the world, in people, in your unquestionably bright future. But that home is no longer yours, and the people living there do not want you at all… What would you do?
The creators of the play invite audiences to see the same story twice, from different perspectives. Could every story have two, three, or perhaps a thousand or a million possible ways of seeing it? It turns out that this is indeed possible, at least when a story is shrouded in fog. In the fog, conflicts and dialogues become increasingly ephemeral, and the boundaries between the characters and the world around them grow faint. The audience is as if invited into the universe of the collective unconscious—a place where there is neither “I” nor “you”, only an eternal fabric of consciousness that exists beyond all personal boundaries. It is a place, or perhaps a state, where words lose their meaning, leaving only silence, a connection between being and non-being, and where the only constant is “nothing”, which grants freedom and eternity.
Is it possible to return to one’s past? Can past and present meet without destroying each other? Attempts to find answers to these questions inspired A. Špilevojus, creator of the plays “Bagadelnia” and “Pakeliui”, to immerse himself in “Fog”, where seeing the world is far more difficult than feeling it.
