Ingmar Bergman: “Only when we feel one another do we feel alive, even if we cause each other pain.”
“I’m glad it all ended more or less halfway decently. It took me three months to write this opus, and another substantial stretch of my life to experience it all. As I wrote about these two people and explored their troubles, I became attached to them in my own way. They are quite contradictory, sometimes frighteningly childish and sometimes sufficiently mature. They have said plenty of foolish things here, but they have also said something wise. They are frightened, content, selfish, stupid, kind, intelligent, self-sacrificing, devoted, angry, gentle, sentimental, unbearable and worthy of love. All of these things at once. So let us see how it all unfolded.”
“In my youth, death frightened me. Now I understand that life is only a light that will one day go out, and there is no need to make a fuss about it.”
Fårö Island, May 28, 1972.
The work is presented by arrangement with the agency Josef Weinberger Limited (London), acting on behalf of the Ingmar Bergman Foundation.
