“Who came in there, one of our own or a stranger?”
The newcomer shuddered all over.
“It seems like one of our own,” he replied hesitantly after a moment.
“But I don’t recognise the voice,” the old man said from the darkness.
“It does seem familiar, but…”
“I suppose you wouldn’t recognise it,” said the newcomer. “You haven’t heard it for ages.”
For a while, silence reigned in the pitch darkness. Then the old man shifted in his bed, making it creak, and asked uncertainly, almost anxiously: “Is it really you, Indrek?”

Director Ingomar Vihmar: “It seems to me that when Tammsaare gave his work the title ‘Truth and Justice’, he didn’t mean it too seriously; there is a fair amount of irony in it. He sensed that what people seek and need is not truth and justice, but compassion and love. In pursuing their own justice and seeking the truth, the characters in the work struggle with the land, God, society, themselves and one another. By the fifth part, they are all worn out by this struggle and have no choice but to surrender. To forgive themselves and others. If those ‘others’ even exist at all. If you give up the struggle and make peace with yourself, you also make peace with those ‘others’, and peace comes to the land! The story could really be called ‘Forgiveness and Surrender’, or ‘Love and Compassion’, or even ‘Love and Death’. But let me be ironic and call the production ‘Truth and Justice’ after all, even though it isn’t really about either truth or justice, but rather about life and love. Is it even a contemporary story? Of course not; people today don’t fight! (That was irony.)”
