A production with music by Jacques Brel — There are few places that remain on the world’s map. Lasting places where people meet, meet again and find themselves anew. It is better when wine flows in these places, music flows, and affectionate words flow—words that touch the soul with a piercing force. “Baar Amsterdam” is a place and a moment where Jacques Brel’s bright-toned world becomes intertwined with the question of everything one must experience and go through for the beauty we embrace to be born. A circle of light. A microphone. A grand figure with an axe-like face. “Don’t Leave Me,” he sings, with his heart laid bare and his face streaming with the sweat of exertion. Jacques Brel’s aim and focus was to tell stories whose core was always built on emotions. Brel made himself the direct messenger of his work, reaching people through words and song. He let his soul resonate with everything he knew and had felt. This production has the same aim—to take the audience on a journey to the outermost edges of the human soul, to touch the corners of which we are stitched together. But also to ask: would this stitching together exist at all without the opening-up and external and internal burning of one artist, one person? The production moves from the light, exalted and sensuously moving into the profound and even unsettling, and does not shy away from asking uncomfortable questions either—which underside is inevitable, and which justification is unjustifiable? The setting of the production is a salon-like meeting place. The form of Brel’s songs themselves is grandly theatrical.
