The memory play The Glass Menagerie (1944) by American playwright Tennessee Williams is one of the masterpieces of 20th-century drama, and it is no coincidence that directors choose to stage it again and again. Like most of Williams’s plays, The Glass Menagerie is deeply autobiographical, reflecting the tragic fate of both the playwright himself and his sister, Rose Isabel. How can a mother let her children—who are different and do not want to, or rather are unable to, follow conventional paths—make their way in life? At a time when so many of their contemporaries cannot find their place in life, The Glass Menagerie becomes a perfect metaphor for people trapped in their own shadow world. The production will also be about how conflict lies within us. Why is it sometimes so hard to free ourselves from the prison of our complexes, doubts and fears? “In this play, I will continue to work through my relationship with my closest playwright,” says director Inese Mičule. In her interpretation, she is particularly interested in bringing out the tragedy of the mother in the Wingfield family and the son Tom’s desire to escape the “glass menagerie,” where he has to pretend to be someone he is not. The production has received nominations for the 2025/2026 Spēlmaņu nakts season in the categories: Young Stage Artist of the Year – Elizabete Milta (Laura Wingfield in The Glass Menagerie, Valmiera Theatre).
