The memory play The Glass Menagerie (1944) by American playwright Tennessee Williams is one of the masterpieces of 20th-century drama; it is no coincidence that directors return to it again and again. Like most of Williams’s plays, The Glass Menagerie is deeply autobiographical and evokes the painful fate of both the playwright himself and his sister, Rose Isabel. How can a mother send her children out into the world when they are different and do not want—or rather, are unable—to follow conventional paths? At a time when so many of their contemporaries cannot find a place for themselves in life, The Glass Menagerie becomes a perfect metaphor for people trapped in their own shadow world. The production will also be about how conflict lies within us. Why is it sometimes so hard to free ourselves from the prison of our complexes, doubts and fears? “In this play, I will continue to explore my relationship with the playwright closest to me,” says director Inese Mičule. In her interpretation, she is especially interested in highlighting the tragedy of the Wingfield family’s mother and her son Tom’s desire to escape the “glass menagerie,” where he has to pretend to be someone he is not. The production received nominations at the 2025/2026 Spēlmaņu nakts awards in the categories: Young Stage Artist of the Year – Elizabete Milta (Laura Wingfield in The Glass Menagerie, Valmiera Theatre).
