American playwright Tennessee Williams’s memory play The Glass Menagerie (1944) is one of the masterpieces of 20th-century drama; it is no wonder directors return to it again and again. Like most of Williams’s plays, The Glass Menagerie is deeply autobiographical and recalls the tragic fate of both the playwright himself and his sister, Rose Isabel. How can a mother send her children out into the world when they are different and do not want—or rather, are unable—to follow conventional paths? At a time when so many of our contemporaries cannot find their place in life, The Glass Menagerie becomes a perfect metaphor for people trapped in their own shadow world. The production will also be about how conflict resides within us. Why is it sometimes so hard to free ourselves from the prison of our complexes, doubts and fears? “In this play, I will continue to work through my relationship with my closest playwright,” says director Inese Mičule. In her interpretation, she is especially interested in bringing out the tragedy of the Wingfield family’s mother and the son Tom’s desire to escape the “glass menagerie”, where he has to pretend to be someone he is not. The production received nominations at the 2025/2026 Spēlmaņu nakts awards in the categories: Young Stage Artist of the Year – Elizabete Milta (Laura Wingfield in The Glass Menagerie, Valmiera Theatre).
