Two on a Swing

In a production by the State Small Theatre of Vilnius, audiences will see a moving retro-style melodrama based on a play by American playwright William Gibson. Written in 1958, the play won its author the prestigious Tony Award and has continued to attract the attention of theatres around the world for its timeless theme and the excellent opportunities it offers actors to showcase their craft.

He and She. Two different worlds, two lonely islands. She is a dancer who cannot find herself; he is a lawyer struggling to make his way. More than anything, they long for love, but pride, self-regard and unbroken ties to a painful past stand in the way of being together. They cling to each other as if grasping at their last hope, yet each expects something different from the other…

Subtle nuances in the relationship between a man and a woman, sharp dialogue and biting humour will immerse theatre audiences in an atmosphere reminiscent of films from the 1960s and let them enjoy the fine performances of Indrė Patkauskaitė and Mantas Vaitiekūnas. In a way, they take the place of the acting pairs recorded in the history of Lithuanian theatre and cinema in earlier productions of Gibson’s play: on stage, Monika Mironaitė and Artiomas Inozemcevas (1962); on screen, Nelė Savičenko and Kostas Smoriginas (1994).

The production “Two on a Swing” warmly invites audiences who have been longing for psychological theatre.
