On the evening of December 18, as the lights of the approaching holidays begin to envelop the cities and a spirit of anticipation, warmth and elation fills the air, the Kaunas City Symphony Orchestra invites you on a special musical journey into the grandeur of Viennese waltzes. This is an evening in which the splendour of 19th-century Vienna will come to life: grand ballrooms, glittering chandeliers and the endless whirl of the waltz. The most popular waltzes by Johann Strauss the Elder and Johann Strauss the Younger will be performed—music that has become inseparable from Viennese elegance, celebration and the joy of life.

Today, it is difficult to imagine the grand history of Viennese culture without the waltz. Yet its beginnings were far more modest. Born from folk dances in the 18th century, the waltz was initially even considered an overly daring dance. Nevertheless, it soon conquered Vienna’s ballrooms and became a true passion of the city. Johann Strauss the Elder helped establish the waltz in Vienna’s aristocratic and urban culture, while his son, Johann Strauss the Younger, raised the genre to new artistic heights, transforming dance music into brilliant, melodic concert miniatures admired for their colourful orchestration.

Behind this extraordinary musical dynasty, however, lies a dramatic story of father and son. Johann Strauss the Elder, already Vienna’s most celebrated composer of dance music, did not want his son to become a musician. Supported by his mother, the young Johann secretly studied music and, in 1844, defying his father’s wishes, formed his own orchestra and made his debut in Vienna. Thus began one of the most remarkable rivalries in music history: Strauss against Strauss, father against son, two orchestras and two formidable personalities competing for the affection of Viennese audiences. Time showed that this rivalry became not only a family drama but also an exceptionally fruitful creative force. After his father’s death, Johann Strauss the Younger took over his orchestra and eventually became the world-renowned King of the Waltz, whose music still symbolises Vienna’s grandeur, elegance and enduring joy of life.

The Viennese waltz has a special power: at the first bars, it seems as though the world begins to turn differently. Its three-quarter time, gently rising melody, playful rhythm and brilliant orchestral sound create a true celebration, blending luxury, romance and joy. It is no coincidence that Strauss’s music remains inseparable from grand end-of-year festivities and Vienna’s New Year celebrations. Let this evening be a beautiful musical prelude to the approaching Christmas festivities—filled with light, elegance, festive splendour and the waltz, which has invited people to celebrate life for more than two centuries.
