The musical SUGAR is a musical adaptation of the film “Some Like It Hot.” Like the film, its plot is based on the play by B. Wilder and I.A.L. Diamond, “Some Like It Hot.” The music draws on the finest jazz traditions of the 1950s and 1960s, nostalgically transporting audiences to a lively satire of the criminal underworld in pre-war America, coloured by a retro aesthetic.
The story depicts the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre in Chicago in 1929. Two jazz musicians happen to witness it. To hide from the Mafia hitmen pursuing them, the musicians disguise themselves as women and get jobs in an all-female jazz band. There they meet the charming singer Sugar Kane, who dreams of marrying a millionaire. The men are swept up in women’s lives and encounter things that are not usually revealed to men. How long will they manage to stay hidden when scantily clad girls are constantly around them, sharing their most intimate secrets? Events begin to unfold in a way neither musician had planned.
The musical “Sugar” premiered on Broadway at the Majestic Theatre on April 9, 1972, starring Robert Morse, Tony Roberts and Elaine Joyce. It ran for 505 performances over more than a year. The musical’s success is reflected in the “Sugar” productions that return to Broadway every few decades.
