The two Eduards, cousins Vilde and Bornhöhe, meet from time to time at the Vilde Museum in Kadriorg. They play chess and talk about literature, women and their shared childhood. It would get boring in eternity otherwise. But eternity is like a river, and as Heraclitus already knew: “You cannot step into the same river twice.” So this time the two men of eternity find themselves in Tartu instead, at the University of Tartu Natural History Museum...
“Let’s say we are all somewhere on a scale, with Transience at one end and Eternity at the other. In between are the Past, the Present and the Future. How we feel at any given moment depends on whether we are where we belong. It seems to me that you’ve been a man of eternity for some time now, just like me, haven’t you? And yet you seem somehow stuck in the past...” Bornhöhe tells Vilde, as Vilde once again complains about the criticism written by Tuglas.
