“Ernesto’s Rabbits” is a family production based on Piret Raud’s novel of the same name. Through a fast-paced plot and colorful characters, it tells the story of a magician who, by fate’s decree, has to find himself a new job. After spending years in the safety of a circus family, the man suddenly finds himself face to face with a world full of private estates, funny bankers, and absurd fur farmers. Ernesto, with his sincere and direct outlook on life, does not accept injustice, stands up for the weaker, and ultimately finds the peace of mind he deserves. Ernesto is a hero who, with a critical child’s perspective, dares to ask questions about what is considered normal in society. He is also someone whose wholehearted devotion to those in his care—the rabbits stolen from a fur farm—could serve as an example to everyone who values nature and friends. Finally, Ernesto shows how important it is to have the courage to seek and find one’s personal happiness, even when the path to it differs from that of others. So where, and in whom, is all that magic and sorcery hidden when the colorful and mysterious circus is gone?
In 2020, the production was nominated for the Salme Reek Theatre Award as an “inventive, playful, and environmentally conscious children’s production.”
