"NOVECENTO" & Discussion Evening

"NOVECENTO" “You are not completely at rock bottom yet if you have a good story to tell and someone to tell it to.”

More than 30 years ago, Italian writer Alessandro Baricco wrote the monologue “Novecento”. Since that day, the story of the ingenious ocean pianist has never ended, but has continually returned to the stage, lived on in various interpretations and adaptations, and captivated readers and audiences in many countries.

The story is about Danny Boodman T.D. Lemon Novecento, the world’s best piano player, who was born in 1900 and spent his entire life aboard the ocean liner “Virginian”, which sailed between Europe and America. Novecento’s life journey on this ship is like a metaphor for human freedom and limitations: on the one hand, we do not wish to leave our safe world, while at the same time the world around us is infinite and full of endless possibilities and choices.

“Novecento” is engaging and understandable on a very everyday level, while at the same time being a deeply poetic and philosophical work that touches on questions with no simple answers, but which continue to haunt us. This story is beautiful in a jazz-like way—free and improvised—while also being both dramatic and comic.
