To mark the anniversary year of the Estonian Academy of Sciences’ Under and Tuglas Literature Institute Museum, evening house tours will take place monthly from September to December. During the tours, visitors will hear about the writers’ lives in the Nõmme house and readings from their works, see interesting objects from the institute’s collections, and learn about the rooms in which leading figures of Estonian literature spent time. Visitors will also get a glimpse behind the scenes of the museum’s research work and be introduced to its current projects.

In the current house at Väikese Illimari 12, Marie Under and Artur Adson lived from 1933 to 1944; during the Second World War, they fled to Sweden. After them, Friedebert and Elo Tuglas, who had lost their home, also moved beneath the pines of Nõmme. In 1971, the Friedebert Tuglas House Museum was founded, and it opened to visitors in 1976.

The museum houses treasures from the book, photograph, manuscript and art collections of Friedebert and Elo Tuglas; the legacy of Artur Adson and Marie Under, primarily from their Exiled Estonian period; the art collection of the Estonian Cultural Foundation in the United States; and the cultural collection of art and literary critic Paul Reets. The house, together with the writers’ garden, has preserved its cosy character, making it seem as though the writer has merely gone out for a short walk, with a pen and inkwell waiting on the table for the next line.

The Estonian-language tours take place on 7 September, 6 October and 11 December, starting at 17:00. The English-language tour takes place on 4 November, starting at 17:00. The tours last approximately one hour. More information is available on the Under and Tuglas Literature Institute website.
