Frederick Clegg lives alone, works at an employment centre and collects butterflies. He is infatuated with Miranda, a student at an art college, whom he secretly watches, not daring to speak to her. Unexpectedly, Clegg wins a large sum of money in the lottery. He buys an isolated house outside the city, abducts Miranda and keeps her in the basement, hoping that one day she will come to love him.
“The Collector” is a chamber drama that explores the delicate boundary between care and hidden forms of control and power. At the heart of the play is the tense conflict between freedom and dependence, where violence is disguised as care, attention and apparent love.
