The wolf is a symbol of wild and untouched nature. Our bogs and larger forest areas have also aptly been called wolf landscapes. It is probably impossible to find another animal in the Finnic regions that has influenced the formation of natural landscapes, as well as people’s language and culture, more than the wolf. (From the joint appeal to select the national animal)
During the autumn’s dark season, we invite you to the forests of Karula to travel through fascinating landscapes and delve into the twists and turns of the wolf’s life. During the hike, led by local hiking guide Paula Solvak, we will move both along forest roads and across the terrain, introducing the life cycle of wolves from puppyhood to old age. At the same time, we will explore the diverse forests around Mähkli village in Karula National Park and the fascinating places found there.
At the end of the hike, we will meet musician and folklore researcher Lauri Õunapuu, who will open up the significance of wolves in Estonian folk culture. Lauri is widely known as a founding member of the band „Metsatöll“, but in folklore circles he is known as a true „folk-song Google“—a man who knows and shares the folklore of our ancestors with his characteristic passionate dedication. We will hear rare stories and songs about wolves in Estonian history.
