Comedy “Swallows of the Homeland”

A drama group called “Virmaline” from a small Estonian municipality decides to stage a musical dedicated to the Estonian War of Independence. Unfortunately, just as many men were unwilling to go to war back then, it is now nearly impossible to persuade them to take part in the play. So once again, the women are left to take charge.

Against the backdrop of staging the musical, the painful issues of contemporary rural life also unfold layer by layer: the everyday concern of deteriorating institutions and the lack of opportunities to renovate them, the depopulation of rural areas, passive family relationships, fondness for alcohol, intolerance towards differences, and the search for a sense of belonging and identity.
