Play "Educating Rita"

Author: Willy Russell
Translator: Meelike Palli
Director: Janek Varblas

On stage, Jõgeva City Theatre: Kätlin Visnapuu (Rita), Janek Varblas (Frank)

One fine day, Rita, who works as a hairdresser, enrols in open literature courses at a university. At first, the situation seems hopeless and even absurd to her instructor, Frank, because Rita has no basic knowledge whatsoever—only a great desire to learn. Gradually, however, Rita begins to understand literature better and better. In addition, she has knowledge about life and other necessary matters, which she also tries to explain to her instructor. Through her sincere and direct nature, comic situations and learning difficulties, Rita reaches the long-awaited day: the exam. By then, however, the instructor has switched roles with his student: Frank now sees Rita merely as an ordinary, ambitious and diligent student who has crammed herself full of specialised vocabulary, but in whom the genuine young woman who entered his office a year and a half earlier has disappeared.

The play is in two acts and lasts 2 hours and 30 minutes.
