Kreek Trio

Performers: Jaak Sooäär (guitar), Anett Tamm (vocals), Taavo Remmel (bass)

Introduction

The Kreek Trio programme features songs from two booklets of Kreek’s sacred folk tunes, enriched by the trio’s improvisations. Cyrillus Kreek’s arrangements of Estonian folk tunes for mixed choir are, with their northernly crisp and clear sound and rich harmonic nuances, close to contemporary North European jazz influenced by folk music. At times, the bold and colourful harmonies also evoke 1970s jazz-rock, although that emerged more than 50 years after Kreek’s folk-tune arrangements.

Guitarist Jaak Sooäär has had the honour of performing this music with the chamber choir Collegium Musicale under the direction of Endrik Üksvärav. An album, “Cyrillus Kreek. Sacred Folk Tunes” (ERP), was also released from this collaboration in 2023. This powerful experience inspired the idea of translating Kreek’s folk-song arrangements into an improvisational chamber-jazz setting. For this, Sooäär has brought in Anett Tamm, a rising star of Estonian jazz, and Taavo Remmel, a double-bass legend equally at home in various musical styles.

In its programme, the trio uses only Kreek’s original harmonies and arrangements, with the aim of highlighting and developing their beautiful nuances from a fresh perspective through improvisation.
