Art Lecture Series at Hopner House: MANTUA. THE DUCHY OF FINE ARTS

Mantua became an important art center under the patronage of the Gonzaga dynasty. Although Mantua was not as large an artistic metropolis as Florence or Rome, in the 15th and 16th centuries it became one of the most important cultural centers of the Italian Renaissance. The Gonzagas invited prominent artists, architects, and scholars to their court, making the city an important center of artistic innovation. The city’s architecture, and especially its ducal palaces, testify to the role played by art-loving rulers in art and culture. The central artists discussed in connection with Mantua and the Gonzaga court are Andrea Mantegna and Giulio Romano, along with the masters associated with them. Lecturer Aleksandra Murre. The lecture includes a wine tasting.
