Do you want to be more confident when communicating with people? Do you want to stop overthinking and learn to react more quickly? Do you want to find a new group of people where it is okay to be awkward and make mistakes? Do you want to try acting, but are afraid that, because you have no previous experience, you have no place in it? Do you want to know how it is possible to create an entire performance on the spot, improvising directly in front of an audience? Do you want to train your abdominal muscles through laughter? If at least one of these questions made you nod or think along, come to the beginners’ improvisation course!
At Rahel Otsa Impro School’s improvisation course for beginners, you can learn about the principles and techniques of improvisational theatre: how to create a story, characters, shorter entertaining scenes and a longer connected performance together. From September to May, the classes consist of games with simple rules that teach you to react to your surroundings while staying in the moment, and provide plenty of shared laughter and joy!
During the course, you will gradually learn to trust yourself and others more, use the improvisation techniques you have learned, enjoy short scenes created together, and by the end of the season be ready to show your friends and relatives a small short performance as well!
Although the classes are spent playing fun theatre games, they also teach other skills needed in life, such as self-expression and confidence, listening skills, cooperation and thinking outside the box.
You do not have to be an actor, an extrovert or the person known among your friends for making witty remarks to join the improvisation course. Everyone who wants to try something new is welcome to the beginners’ course! Previous theatre experience is not required. Many people come to the course without knowing anyone there and without having tried improvisation before. During the season, new friendships often develop, and over time new improvisation groups also emerge from the Impro School community!
After completing the course, you will:
- listen better to both yourself and others;
- adapt more quickly to new situations;
- dare more often to take responsibility and trust other people’s ideas as well;
- have an overview of improvisational theatre as a genre;
- be able to create an improvised narrative theatre performance;
- have stronger abdominal muscles and a better sense of wellbeing from the laughter that comes with playing!
After completing the beginners’ course, it is possible to participate in advanced courses in subsequent years, where different improvisation formats are learned.
In the 2026/2027 season, the Impro School has a total of four Estonian-language and three English-language groups.
