Fauré. Requiem in D minor, Op. 48
Latvian conductor Aivis Greters has assembled a deeply considered whole for this grand vocal-symphonic concert during Holy Week. Four works from different periods and with different musical languages meet here in the same spiritual space. This musical journey reflects the meaning of Good Friday—suffering, mourning, silence, light and hope.
Unlike many other requiems, such as those by Verdi or Mozart, where the focus of the composition is the Last Judgement, Fauré’s requiem is comforting and bright. In the composer’s own words, it is like a “lullaby of death”. Fauré omitted the traditional Dies irae (Day of Wrath) and ended the requiem with In Paradisum (In Paradise), symbolising eternal peace and hope.
The work’s indisputably best-known movement is the soprano solo Pie Jesu, which is also often performed as an independent concert piece.
The concert includes an interval; duration approximately 1 hour 50 minutes.
