40 years since “Graceland”
Ladysmith Black Mambazo (South Africa)
Estonian Voices
More than 40 years ago, American singer-songwriter Paul Simon travelled to Johannesburg after hearing a demo tape featuring vocal music unlike anything he had experienced before. Simon travelled almost secretly, as he did not wish to attract the attention of the apartheid regime of the time.
This journey by Paul Simon marked the beginning of one of the most influential chapters in the history of pop music: the album “Graceland” (1986) and the subsequent world tour, which included all the important pop and rock stars of the time. A moment arrived when the world opened its ears to African music in a different way, understanding that the roots of contemporary rhythmic music lie there. At the heart of this movement stood the vocal ensemble Ladysmith Black Mambazo.
The members of Estonian Voices have always been among the ensemble’s unwavering admirers. Now the artists share the stage, and something new and jointly created may emerge.
Concert without an interval, approximately 90 minutes.
