PIANO AFTERNOON
Jorma Toots (piano)
Programme: Schubert
Some musical works seem to open up a space in which music travels on the border between the visible and invisible worlds. Schubert’s Three Piano Pieces, D 946 (1828), part of his late output, are the composer’s last major works for piano, combining exceptionally rich harmony, imaginative form, lyricism and unexpected dramatic contrasts. The Sonata in A minor, D 537, was completed in 1817, when Schubert was only twenty years old. Already here, features that characterise his mature style are evident.
Pianist Jorma Toots graduated from the Heino Eller Tartu Music School, where he studied piano with Pille Taniloo. At the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre, his teachers were Professor Lilian Semper and Professor Matti Reimann. He is currently pursuing doctoral studies at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre, where he researches the possibilities of imitating orchestral colours in a piano ensemble. Jorma works as a teacher at the Eller-named Music School and is a lecturer at the University of Tartu Viljandi Culture Academy. As a soloist and ensemble musician, he performs regularly both in Estonia and abroad.
Together with pianist Ebe Müntel, he forms the piano duo Ebe Müntel and Jorma Toots, which began regular activities in 2004. In the same year, the duo reached the final of the Con Brio competition for young performers. In the 2008–2009 season, the duo successfully took part in piano duo competitions in Poland and the Czech Republic.
The concert lasts approximately 1 hour. Latecomers will not be admitted to the concert. Photography and filming are not permitted.
The concert series is accompanied by an audience education programme for students, under which a group of students and the teacher or other group leader accompanying them may attend the concert free of charge. To join the programme, please contact ooper@parnu.ee.
