At the end of November, on the 27th and 28th, the amateur theatre festival “Bīne 2026” will take place in Vircava Parish, featuring six performances. The festival will open on the evening of 27 November with an official ceremony and a performance of Ž. Sibleiras’s “The Wind Rustles in the Poplars” by the Jelgava Ādolfs Alunāns Theatre. “The ‘Bīne’ festival in Jelgava Municipality is a much-anticipated event held every two years. It is a wonderful opportunity for anyone interested to spend two days enjoying culture and theatre free of charge, with performances from almost all over Latvia. This year, amateur theatres from Krimūnas, Vecsaules, Saldus, Talsu and Jelgava will take part, as well as, of course, the hosts—the amateur theatre ‘Bīne’ from Vircava Parish in Jelgava Municipality. At the festival’s conclusion on the evening of 28 November, participants can look forward to a small theatrical surprise. We will all look back on the year’s work, present the festival awards, and officially close this year’s ‘Bīne’ with brief speeches,” says Nelda Ķikute, chief specialist at the Jelgava Municipality Culture Department. The festival is organised as part of project No. 7/3-9.5/2026, “Amateur Theatre Festival ‘Bīne’ 2026,” approved under the “Zemgale Historical Cultural Programme 2026” project competition administered by the Zemgale Planning Region. The project aims to promote the continuity of amateur theatre activity, artistic growth, quality development, and access to culture in areas of the historical Zemgale region that are far from cultural centres.
