Conversation Evening with Valters Reiznieks

At Limbaži Museum on 14 November at 14:00: “The Sound of Zithers”—a conversation evening with Valters Reiznieks and a presentation of the film “Zither-Like Instruments in Latvia.”

The event will include excerpts from the documentary film “Zither-Like Instruments in Latvia” and musical performances.

On 14 November at 14:00, Limbaži Museum invites you to a conversation with folk musician Valters Reiznieks. He builds and restores various folk instruments, including zither-kokles and Ievina accordions, and is a craftsman with “golden hands.” Ethnomusician Ilmārs Pumpurs will also take part in the evening and speak about folk musical instruments in Latvia.

In 2024–2026, the documentary film “Zither-Like Instruments in Latvia” was made with support from the State Culture Capital Foundation’s Vidzeme Culture Programme and the target programme “Programme for the Sustainability and Development of Elements Included in the National Intangible Cultural Heritage List.” In the film, Valters Reiznieks introduces the zithers found in Latvia and the basics of playing them. Excerpts from the film will be shown during the event. Folk music will also be performed, so visitors can hear the different zither-like instruments.
