Jyväskylä Theatre House was designed by Academician Alvar Aalto. The building was completed in 1982, six years after Aalto’s death. It is part of Aalto’s administrative centre plan for Jyväskylä, drawn up in the 1960s. The other parts of the plan are the Police Building (1971) and the Office Building (1978).
The theatre building underwent a major renovation project in 2024–2026. Over more than forty years, it has hosted thousands of theatre performances, concerts and operas, as well as various events, celebrations and seminars. The main auditorium has 506 seats and the smaller auditorium 176. The grand foyer can accommodate gatherings ranging from a few dozen people to several hundred. It offers a view of Kirkkopuisto.
Founded in 1961, Jyväskylä City Theatre is the largest professional theatre in Central Finland and produces five to seven premieres each year. It stages more than 200 performances annually, with around 40,000 audience members. We offer high-quality, varied theatre experiences with all our heart. The theatre’s own programme is complemented by visiting productions, ranging from crowd-pleasing large-scale works to smaller, intimate performances.
