Micha Hartung (Charly Hübner), a Berlin video rental shop owner, is on the verge of bankruptcy when he accidentally becomes a hero overnight. On the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, ambitious journalist Alexander Landmann (Leon Ullrich) portrays Micha as the genius responsible for the largest mass escape in East German history. Against his will, Micha becomes a fraud and is thrust into the public spotlight. But the attention has its benefits too, as he meets the woman of his dreams, Paula (Christiane Paul). However, this budding love story is in danger of falling apart amid a swirl of misunderstandings and lies. A Hero of Berlin is the final directorial work of Wolfgang Becker, known for Goodbye Lenin, which was also a success in Finland.
