Theatre legend, director, actor and Finlandia Prize-winning author Juha Hurme brought his own version of Seven Brothers to Jyväskylä in autumn 2025. The adaptation and direction are based on his own new “translation” of the original text. The form of Aleksis Kivi’s original story is ingenious. Nothing comes easily to the seven, so they keep failing. Each crisis is followed by an intense crisis meeting, where they come up with a solution that ends in a new catastrophe. And so it’s time for another meeting! Hurme’s Seven Brothers is a fast-paced story about seven marginalised young people who retreat into a wilderness forest for ten years to study both literacy and how to read society. The brothers are like humanity in miniature. Relying on one another, they somehow manage to survive, keeping their wits about them until the story’s balanced conclusion.
