Winter art

Ranua-based painter and visual arts teacher Eero Österberg (born 1959 in Pello) finds human and animal figures in snow-covered trees. The painting surface serves as a stage for often tragicomic events rooted in everyday life, classical mythology or fairy tales. The images may also reflect the present day and world politics on a symbolic level. Viewers see in them what they wish to see.

Österberg has returned to the subject of snow-laden trees from time to time, mainly as a result of painting and photography trips to Iso-Syöte, starting in 2006. He has practised landscape painting based on direct observation since his youth. He finds it meaningful to work in the space between representational and non-representational imagery. The subject finds the style best suited to its message each time, while colour and painting remain central. When depicting snow-laden trees, the imagination takes over. Viewers, too, are entirely free to interpret the image.

Eero Österberg undertakes commissioned landscapes, portraits and monumental paintings for private clients, businesses and organisations.
