Director Olga Lapina, awarded two Golden Stage Crosses, and the actors of Keistuolių teatras draw on the work of Miloš Macourek to open a door into an exceptionally fragile and sensitive world: the experiences of a child taking their first steps at school. The Czech writer M. Macourek, author of the legendary tales about Boniface’s holiday and a hippopotamus afraid of vaccinations, shows through his work that a child’s imagination is their greatest creative force. His writing stands out for its unconventional imagery, playful solutions and characters that surprise the adult eye. “The Long Break” is a performance not only for schoolchildren, but for everyone around them—parents and teachers—revealing a vivid world that constantly changes in a child’s eyes and thoughts, and is entirely different from the one we see as adults. It is also a performance for anyone who has experienced what it means to leave a safe, slightly magical world and step into the large, unfamiliar and frightening life of school.
