Riddle(s)

A performance that seeks the present in the oldest traditions invites audiences into the mysterious world of riddles, where Lithuanian folklore, mythology and its motifs intertwine, playfully expressed through the language of metaphor and imagery. Alongside two actors, young audience members can guess, make mistakes and discover the answers to questions that speak to the wisdom of Lithuanian folk tradition and the paradoxes of everyday life. Aušra Bagočiūnaitė Paukštienė, director and visual artist representing „Dailininko teatras“, creates this interactive visual performance through the lens of an appreciation for the beauty of nature and the world, play, paradox and the wonder of everyday life. In her words: “Those images are often fantastic, involving unexpected juxtapositions of phenomena and objects. The riddles posed by the actors reveal our ancestors’ encoded worldview and wisdom. In ancient times, solving riddles or proverbs as part of a ritual could be not only a game, a form of competition, or a demonstration of wisdom and skill, but also a matter of life or death.”
