Pinocchio is a clever “puppet-like” creature, unequivocally chasing pleasures and ways to avoid the “unpleasant” and “boring” parts of life. At director Šarūnas Datenis’s prompting, he comes to life not in the time of Carlo Collodi’s fairy tale, nor in the present day, but in the near future, where today’s problems of consumerism, automation and alienation have intensified. And certainly no one carves him from wood: he is not a wooden puppet, but an android assembled with the help of artificial intelligence. Barely born, Pinocchio already knows his rights and needs perfectly well, but to understand the essential things about being human, he must overcome a long, danger-strewn journey. After all, it is often unclear to us, too, what it means to be a good person these days and, most importantly, how to become one. Despite our good intentions, we often fail to follow the “right” plan... On this complex journey of discovering the world, audiences will hear many original songs in an Š. Datenis production for the first time: electronic music, non-poetic verse, and sounds of jazz and hip-hop. In addition, for the first time, playwright Teklė Kavtaradzė has been brought on board, helping to substantially revise the text of C. Collodi’s classic fairy tale and adapt it to the present day.
