This year marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of Edmundas Alfonsas Frykas (1876–c. 1944), a renowned interwar Lithuanian engineer and architect born in Kaunas who designed the Kaunas State Philharmonic building. This autumn, we are once again opening our doors for a special tour dedicated to the occasion. During the tour, you will discover not only the Philharmonic building, the most monumental masterpiece by this distinguished Lithuanian modernist architect, but also learn more about E. A. Frykas’s other projects in Kaunas and their significance to the city’s architectural character. The architect himself is no less fascinating: the tour will reveal his story through both his creative legacy and his life, which ended as did that of many interwar Lithuanian intellectuals, when talented people were driven abroad by historical events. Today, E. A. Frykas’s name is inseparable from Kaunas modernism, which is included on the UNESCO World Heritage List, and his contribution to Lithuanian architecture is unquestionable, both for the nationally significant buildings he designed and for his distinctive creative style and grand buildings, now a century old, that connect the present with the past.
