Grand Hall, Kaunas State Philharmonic. The traditional autumn event—the contemporary music festival “Iš Arti”—presents six events from November 10 to 21, exploring the field of contemporary music, from reflections on the modernist tradition to new stage forms, and offering listeners an experience of its many-sided world.

At the festival’s closing concert, in collaboration with the Vocal Art Network, the interdisciplinary project “Voice Messages to Sofija – A Documentary Fantasy About the Čiurlionis Who Lives on Within Us” is presented.

What might have happened if one of Lithuania’s most remarkable cultural geniuses had not died at just 35? What would the continuation of Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis’s life have looked like if his treatment at the sanatorium had succeeded and a fateful cold had not developed into fatal pneumonia?

“Voice Messages to Sofija” is an interdisciplinary work combining documentary material, interview excerpts, electronic music, vocal art and imaginative dramaturgy. Composer Jurgis Kubilius’s score draws on the correspondence between M. K. Čiurlionis and Sofija Kymantaitė-Čiurlionienė, transforming it into a contemporary inner diary of voice messages. The work invites us to view M. K. Čiurlionis’s life through the experiences of people today—not as an idealised myth, but as the story of a sensitive person full of contradictions and difficult decisions. Between love and self-denial, creative obsession and social reality, M. K. Čiurlionis becomes close and familiar in this narrative—even a reflection of ourselves.

The creative team made expeditions to key places in M. K. Čiurlionis’s biography, from Druskininkai to Palanga, recording people’s memories, knowledge or lack of knowledge, and emotional associations with his name. These contemporary reflections became dramaturgical passages that expand and transform the historical narrative, revealing layers of cultural memory and its transience.

“Voice Messages to Sofija” invites us to reconsider our relationship with cultural icons, their legacy, and how much of ourselves we have inscribed in the myth. It is a story about what might have happened if everything had turned out differently—and what that says about the choices we make in our own lives.
