This year marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of Edmundas Alfonsas Frykas (1876–c. 1944), a prominent interwar Lithuanian engineer and architect born in Kaunas who designed the Kaunas State Philharmonic building. This autumn, we are once again opening our doors for a special tour dedicated to the occasion. During the tour, you will discover not only the Philharmonic building, the most monumental masterpiece by this outstanding Lithuanian modernist architect, but also learn more about E. A. Frykas’s other projects in Kaunas and their significance to the city’s architectural character. The architect himself is no less fascinating: the tour will reveal his story through both his creative legacy and his life, which ended much like that of many interwar Lithuanian intellectuals, as talented people were swept abroad by historical events. Today, E. A. Frykas’s name is inseparable from Kaunas modernism, which is included on the UNESCO World Heritage List. His contribution to Lithuanian architecture is indisputable, both because of the nationally significant buildings he designed and his distinctive creative style and grand buildings, now a century old, that connect the present with the past.

Partner: Kaunas Regional State Archives
Doors open at 11:30.

We sincerely regret that the tour is not accessible to visitors with mobility impairments or those who have difficulty moving, including anyone unable to climb steep stairs.
