OKT / Vilnius City Theatre: The Saint

The creators of the production take as their starting point the story of Mary of Egypt, shrouded in legend and mysticism. A woman who was forced to sell her body and lived in 4th-century Alexandria travelled to Jerusalem with pilgrims. Yet the gates of the Holy Sepulchre were closed to her. Afterward, she wandered in the desert for many years, seeking repentance and peace.

What might the story of a 21st-century Mary of Egypt look like as she wanders through an urban “desert” in search of liberation? Has our society, in becoming more civilised, become less violent? More empathetic? More forgiving? More tolerant? Ultimately, less patriarchal? Today, Mary of Egypt could be any woman—a mother, daughter, sister or wife—navigating every day the razor-sharp boundary between saint and sinner.

In this premiere, OKT/Vilnius City Theatre invites audiences to enter another unexplored territory—this time an especially uncomfortable, yet particularly important, X territory. “The Saint” is a territory of violence, where a woman who has endured violence and dependence throughout her life finds the strength to emerge from her crisis and choose a radically different path in life. It is a production about a woman’s survival in a radical patriarchal society rife with violence against women. Inspired by Vidmantė Jasukaitytė’s novel “Mary of Egypt.”
