In a remote Irish town, two brothers, Valene and Coleman, live under one roof, their daily life an endless battle. After their father’s death, their relationship grows even more strained: they provoke and take revenge on each other, argue over the smallest things, and their conflicts edge towards a dangerous breaking point. The local priest, Father Welsh, tries to reconcile them, while finding it increasingly difficult himself to come to terms with the violence, hatred and indifference pervading the town. Old conflicts and grievances accumulated over years flare up here over the slightest things. Yet beneath the sharp words and absurd arguments, something much more gradually comes to light: loneliness, a longing for closeness, and a desperate human desire to be understood. With the black humour characteristic of Martin McDonagh, the play explores family, guilt, faith and forgiveness. It is about people who do not know how to be together, yet cannot be without each other. Where does anger end and love begin? Is it possible to forgive someone after living with resentment for years? And can a person change when it seems too late? “The Lonesome West” is a tragicomic story about the paradoxes of human relationships, in which laughter draws dangerously close to tragedy, while beneath the harshness and absurd cruelty lies a deeply human desire to be heard, understood and loved. “This is a story about people who know how to hurt, but not how to embrace. About those who long to be heard, yet cannot listen themselves. About loneliness that sometimes begins not when no one is nearby, but when the person beside you becomes a stranger. No one here is entirely innocent. And no one is completely lost,” says director Rolandas Dovydaitis.
The premiere is scheduled for 21 and 22 November 2026.
