In a remote Irish town, two brothers, Valene and Coleman, live under one roof, their daily life an endless struggle. After their father’s death, their relationship grows even more strained: they provoke and take revenge on each other, argue over the smallest things, and their conflicts approach a dangerous threshold. The local priest, Father Welsh, tries to reconcile them, while finding it increasingly difficult to come to terms with the violence, hatred and indifference that pervade the town. Old conflicts and years of accumulated grievances flare up over the slightest things. Yet beneath the barbed words and absurd arguments, something much deeper gradually emerges: loneliness, a longing for closeness, and a person’s desperate desire to be understood. With the dark humor characteristic of Martin McDonagh, the play explores family, guilt, faith and forgiveness. It is about people who do not know how to be together, yet cannot be without each other. Where does anger end and love begin? Is it possible to forgive someone when you have lived with resentment for years? And can you change when it seems too late? “The Lonesome West” is a tragicomic story about the paradoxes of human relationships, where laughter comes dangerously close to tragedy and, beneath roughness and absurd cruelty, lies a very human desire to be heard, understood and loved. “It is a story about people who know how to hurt, but not how to embrace. About those who long to be heard, yet cannot listen themselves. About loneliness, which sometimes begins not when no one is nearby, but when the person beside you becomes a stranger. No one here is entirely innocent. And no one is completely lost,” says director Rolandas Dovydaitis. Scheduled premiere: 21 and 22 November 2026. The play “The Lonesome West” was first presented by Druid Theatre Company and the Royal Court Theatre on 10 June 1997 at the Town Hall Theatre in Galway, Ireland. The production by Druid Theatre Company and the Royal Court Theatre was first presented in New York on Broadway on 27 April 1999. The production was presented by Randall Wreghitt, Steven M. Levy, Norma Langworthy, Gayle Francis, Dani Davis and Jason Howland, Joan Stein and Susan Deitz, and Everett King.
