In a remote Irish town, two brothers, Valene and Coleman, live under the same roof, their everyday life an endless struggle. After their father’s death, their relationship grows even more strained: they provoke and take revenge on each other, argue over the smallest things, and their conflicts approach a dangerous threshold. The local priest, Father Welsh, tries to reconcile them, while finding it increasingly difficult himself to come to terms with the violence, hatred and indifference that pervade the town. Old conflicts and grievances accumulated over the years flare up here over the smallest things. Yet beneath the cutting words and absurd arguments, much more gradually emerges: loneliness, a longing for closeness and a desperate human desire to be understood. With the dark humour characteristic of Martin McDonagh, the play explores family, guilt, faith and forgiveness. It is about people who do not know how to be together, yet cannot be without each other. Where does anger end and love begin? Is it possible to forgive someone after living with resentment for years? And can one change when it seems it is already too late? “The Lonesome West” is a tragicomic story about the paradoxes of human relationships, in which laughter comes dangerously close to tragedy, and beneath the harshness and absurd cruelty lies a deeply human longing to be heard, understood and loved. “This is a story about people who know how to hurt, but not how to embrace. About those who long to be heard, yet cannot listen themselves. About loneliness that sometimes begins not when nobody is nearby, but when the person beside you becomes a stranger. No one here is entirely innocent. And no one is completely lost,” says director Rolandas Dovydaitis. The premiere is scheduled for 2026-11-21 and 22. The play “The Lonesome West” was first presented by the Druid Theatre Company and the Royal Court Theatre at the Town Hall Theatre in Galway, Ireland, on 10 June 1997.
