Opera director Viktorija Streiča says of the upcoming production that Mozart’s *The Marriage of Figaro* is an opera in which comedy becomes a way to speak about mechanisms of power, social hierarchy and people’s efforts to preserve their dignity. This story is not about a wedding or an intrigue, but about who has the right to decide and who must put up with things; about structures in which freedom becomes a privilege and dependence the norm. This production is about the present day, about patriarchy, where women are still described as “belonging” to someone; about how “I do what I want” becomes the everyday practice of the powerful; and about how love, wisdom and solidarity become a quiet form of resistance.
The opera will remain a comedy, but it will speak about serious matters. Laughter is not an escape, but criticism. The absurd is not decoration, but a form of truth. The characters are vivid, emotions extreme and situations heated, but everything serves one purpose: to expose injustice so that it can be recognised, named and destroyed.
