The musical SUGAR is a musical adaptation of the film “Some Like It Hot.” Like the film, its plot is based on B. Wilder and I.A.L. Diamond’s play “Some Like It Hot.” Its music, rooted in the finest jazz traditions of the 1950s and 1960s, nostalgically transports audiences to an entertaining satire of the pre-war American underworld, coloured by a retro aesthetic.
The story reveals how a gangland massacre took place in Chicago on St Valentine’s Day in 1929. Two jazz musicians accidentally witness it. To hide from the pursuing Mafia hitmen, the musicians disguise themselves as women and join an all-female jazz orchestra. There they meet the charming singer Sugar Kane, who dreams of marrying a millionaire. The young men are swept up in women’s lives and encounter things that are usually not revealed to men. How long will they manage to keep hiding when half-naked girls are constantly around them, sharing their most intimate secrets? Events begin to unfold in a way neither musician had quite planned.
The musical “Sugar” premiered on Broadway at the Majestic Theatre on 9 April 1972, starring Robert Morse, Tony Roberts and Elaine Joyce. A total of 505 performances were staged over more than a year. The musical’s success is evidenced by “Sugar” productions returning to Broadway every few decades.
